Natural Features Ordinances/Tree Surveys
Klatt Environmental Associates LLC
Largely in response to citizen concerns, more and more cities,
townships, and counties are taking steps to implement "smart growth".
This concept recognizes that community residents want to have a
strong local economy, but also a high quality of life... including a clean
and healthy environment. Consequently, local governments have been
developing "natural feature ordinances" and modifying their zoning
ordinances to require consideration of environmental issues when
commercial interests propose developments. Factors typically
considered include:
- wetlands
- woodlands
- landmark trees
- lakes, ponds and streams
- locally rare species
- open space
- steep slopes/soils
- scenic views
The ordinances require documentation of these natural features by
competent professionals, with that documentation being considered by
the city or township as the proposed development undergoes "plan
review". With its extensive experience in preparing environmental
impact analyses, the staff of KEA has over 20 years of experience in
preparing such documentation and in helping clients work through the
environmental review process.
Some of the clients we have helped through this process are:
